Background

The Girls Growth and Development (GIGDEV) is a local Non-Governmental Organization based in Jisonayili (a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana) established in 1998 by a Retired Nurse/Midwife by name Madam Stella Nitori and some community activists to provide sustainable livelihood development to deprived rural communities and underprivileged young girls and women in particular.

The organization is multi-faceted in its approach to eliminate depravity, marginalization, illiteracy, torture and poverty among deprived communities, especially, girls, and women in particular.  It tackles these issues, by providing practical vocations for young girls, coming from deprived and needy homes and communities in the fields of dressmaking, hairdressing, batik tie & dye, pomade and soap making, weaving and catering.  In another perspective, it undertakes advocacy on Gender, Sexual Reproductive Health & STIs/HIV/AIDS and Human Rights, with emphasis on children and women’s rights.
